We continue on… I have recently returned from two weeks of sailing through the British Virgin Islands. The place of lore and mystery. The islands of mayhem, conquering and pirates.
My wife and I did this bucket list excursion with a small group of friends knowing it would put us all out of the country during the election. Thinking that it might be helpful to be “out of touch” during the results.
One thing about this world is that it is difficult to be “out of touch”. I have experimented with “off grid” living and enjoyed it. But that is a much different situation than being “out of touch”. Even on small tropical jungle islands that have only 200 people living there it’s difficult to be “out of touch”. In fact, from my many traveling experiences across this great planet of ours over the years, I have found that most people living outside of the United States are much more well versed about our country’s issues and politics than most people living in and voting in our country. From my experience, most of the “out of touch” live right here in America.
The rest of the world has to be “in” as the rest of the world is directly affected by the policies of the United States government. The economic, environmental, and military policies of the United States leave a wide wake in the global currents of their lives.
We spent a few days monitoring the tropical storm that loomed along the east of Puerto Rico and Cuba. Keeping a watchful eye on the winds and the clouds. We weathered a few nights of torrential rains, high waves and winds. Interestingly enough those nights and days corresponded directly with the outcome of the Presidential election.
Our list of peeps included two friends whom are both captains and expert sailors. This gave the others of our “crew” a bit of solace and a chance to learn more before going back to their individual yacht clubs. We moored. We anchored. We hoisted sails and let out the jib numerous times to help us cross the longer channels. We swam to shore in some places and we dingied to shore in others.
And, we drank rum. Although, there isn’t enough rum in the world to drown the newfound shock and sorrow that shown on many faces across the globe.
Life is chaos. Life is ebbs and flows. Life is learning how to adapt. Life is understanding that there is nothing that is a given. Taking democracy for granted is a lesson learned now for many.
The native peoples of the Caribbean know this. They understand this. Yet, they say:
Ja Love. One love.
The big ship, called The United States, has decided to allow a new “captain” to helm their boat. A person who many think is “out of touch”. Many others were “out of touch” in their decisions due to their social media dis and mis-information feeds and are now wondering what the hell just happened. Many others are simply “out of touch” in a land that is becoming unrecognizable. And some are filled with glee.
What I have learned through these past handful of months is that it behooves us all to continue to be humbled and grateful. I remain humbled and grateful for the interest of my blog and podcasts. I will continue to explore the various topics that interest me and try to give my three cents. Or at least my $.00000000003 Bitcoins…
As always, I would enjoy hearing from you, the readers.
Life is a never ending journey and exploration of love. It took a trip to the islands to be reminded of that.
Ja Love. One Love.
I wish all the best as we untie ourselves from the dock and head out into the rough waters of this next journey.
Beautifully expressed!
